Creative Ways to Champion YOUR Library

Libraries are vital community resources that provide access to information, education, and enrichment for people of all ages. The dedicated librarians who work here do so because they believe in the power of knowledge and the importance of making it accessible to everyone. If you’re wondering how you can contribute to the success and maintenance of your local library, here are several ways you can get involved and make a difference.

Become a Friend of the Library (FOL)

One of the most impactful ways to support your local library is by joining the “Friends of the Library” group.  These are dedicated volunteers who work to support library programs, events, and services. As a Friend of the Library, you can:

  • Volunteer Your Time: Help organize and run library events, book sales, and community programs.
  • Advocate for the Library: Spread the word about library services and resources and engage with community members to raise awareness.
  • Participate in Fundraising Efforts: Assist in planning and executing fundraising activities that provide essential financial support to the library.
  • Visit FOL Bookstore: Browse and purchase books year round. All proceeds support your library.
  • Enjoy Member Perks:  Friends of the Library member receive special benefits and opportunities throughout the year such as fine forgiveness, author meet-and-greets and early entry to author events and our annual book sale.

Donate to the Library Foundation

Financial contributions are crucial for libraries to maintain and expand their services. Consider donating to the library foundation, a nonprofit organization that typically supports the library programing, service and staff development.  Your donations can:

  • Fund New Resources and Technology: Help the library acquire new and technological equipment.  An example of new furniture in the George Amos Room.
  • Support Library Programs: Provide funding for educational events, workshops, and cultural programs that benefit the community.  Example: Chef Yazi and our Story Slam program.  Community Service initiatives; recently our meal packs for the soup kitchen.
  • Enhance Facilities: Contribute to the maintenance and improvement of library facilities, ensuring a welcoming and functional environment for all patrons.  Our beautiful art collection.
  • Support the Dolly Parton Imagination Library: Help children ages 0-5 receive one free book each month, fostering early literacy and a love of reading.

Utilize Library Services and Facilities

Another excellent way to support your library is simply by using the resources and services they offer. Libraries thrive when they are actively used by the community. Here’s how you can make the most of your library:

  • Borrow Books and Materials: Check out books, e-books, audiobooks, DVDs, and more. The more items circulated, the more support the library receives.
  • Notary Services: Did you know that we have notary service?  It just costs you $3.00/stamp.
  • Attend Events and Workshops: Participate in the wide array of events and educational programs offered by the library.
  • Use Library Spaces: Take advantage of study areas, meeting rooms, telehealth booth, maker space and other facilities offered by your library.

Advocate for Library Support

Be an advocate for the library by voicing your support to local government officials and community leaders. Here are some ways to advocate:

  • Share Your Library Story: Tell others about how the library has positively impacted your life or community.
  • Participate in Library Advocacy Campaigns: Join efforts to secure funding and support for library initiatives.
  • Encourage Others to Support the Library: Spread the word about the importance of libraries and how others can get involved.

Donate Books and Materials

If you have gently used books, magazines, or educational materials, consider donating them to the library. These items can either be added to the library’s collection or sold in book sales to raise funds.

Supporting your local library can be a rewarding experience that benefits both you and your community. Whether through volunteering, donating, utilizing services, or advocating for library support, your contributions can make a significant impact. Libraries are a cornerstone of any community, and with your help, they can continue to thrive and serve future generations. Librarians dedicate themselves to this mission because they believe in creating opportunities for learning and growth, fostering a love for reading, and building an informed society. Not only that we absolutely love our community and forming bonds with our neighbors!  Your support helps us achieve these goals.
