George Amos, Campbell County cowpuncher and 2024 Wyoming Cowboy Hall of Fame inductee, did not always fit the mold of what most consider a stereotypical Old West cowboy. A lifelong bachelor who, according to the Wyoming Cowboy Hall of Fame, refused to wear a gun because “that was just asking for trouble,” was known as an avid reader. A downtown marker states that Amos once subscribed to as many as 20 magazines and newspapers, and that, at his death in 1929, he donated his $21,000 estate to establish a public library for our community. His forward thinking and generosity helped build the George Amos Memorial Library downtown.
George Amos loved libraries, and The Library Foundation, Inc. (LFI) does too. Because, like Amos, an unconventional cowboy of his time, we believe they should serve the public and offer Something for Everyone. Through private donations and fundraising, LFI has provided staff development funding, program underwriting, curation of an exceptional Western art collection, and special projects to help Campbell County libraries continue to innovate and provide the best resources and services.
Over the course of the next year, LFI hopes to give Campbell County residents even more reasons to love their library and continue to provide Something for Everyone. From the basics like books, summer reading programs, author visits and the Library of Things, where you can borrow (for free!) a sewing machine or a digital camera, we want to help ensure that the library continues to be a place for everyone to learn and explore.
Campbell County residents have a history of helping. Whether it was George Amos in 1929 or countless patrons from the past 100 years, our community works hard to support one another. This is why we now ask you to show your love for our libraries by making a donation–big or small– to the Library Foundation because we can not do this work alone. Your tax-deductible donation will continue to create opportunities for people from all walks of life to gather, to explore resources, and make new friendships. It will support our goal to provide Something for Everyone.
