A Newbie’s Overly-Excited Tour of the Teen Room!

Hello, dear readers!

I’m your new sometimes-staff member, Lindee.  I started working in the Teen Room right about the time it shut down for COVID, so I thought I’d take this opportunity to fangirl about how cool the Teen Room is.  And maybe plug in a little reminder of what all the Teen Room has to offer.

So of course, there are the books.  I think there’s just something special about young adult literature.  It can tackle some of the biggest issues we face today, and it can do so without taking itself too seriously.  If you’re going through something, we have books that can remind you you’re not alone.  And if you need a little escape or just a little fun, we have books for that, too.

My favorites so far are the Avatar Kyoshi duology and These Hollow Vows.  One’s pretty new, and one’s been around for a bit.

Rise of Kyoshi, Book 1
Shadow of Kyoshi, Book 2

Avatar the Last Airbender: The Rise of Kyoshi and The Shadow of Kyoshi bring readers back to the world of the Avatar, before the GAang saved the world from the Fire Nation army.  Kyoshi as the Avatar is not who anyone expected—she’s not even that good at bending her original element!  But being raised away from the limelight and outside of the political machinations of her best friend’s mentor (as he teaches who he THINKS is the Avatar), might be the absolute best thing for the Avatar.  Who else could save the Earth Kingdom, on the brink of war, but someone impartial?

These Hollow Vows

These Hollow Vows marries some classic fairytale elements with some high fantasy characters, when character Brie must attend a ball in the Faerie world to save her sister, Jas.  Jas was sold to Mordeus, the uncrowned king of the Dark Throne, when Jas and Brie couldn’t pay their aunt their “life debts.”  With love triangles, a smattering of unexpected magic, and TWO twist endings, you won’t be surprised to hear I was positively betrayed when I learned the sequel is still 6 months out!

Our nonfiction section has some really cool books, with my favorites being the themed cookbooks.  Yep, themed.  Like, Doctor Who, and Harry Potter, and general nerd cookbooks.  There are tons of other topics in there too, y’know.  History and mental health and programming.  But somehow I always end up at the cookbooks.

Next there’s the makerspace, with a little bit of everything.  Fancy teaching yourself to sew?  There are sewing needles for hand sewing and even a sewing machine!  (Does the Teen Room nonfiction section have books on sewing?  Better explore and find out!)  The Perler beads are always popular, and I’ve seen some excitement about the crochet looms.  There’s an ever-shifting collection of creative outlets there, so feel free to dig around and make something amazing!

There are more adventures ahead in our tour of the Amazing Teen Room, so keep an eye out for installment 2!

Happy National Puzzle Day!

Do you like puzzles? There are so many types of puzzles including, Sudoku, jigsaw, crosswords and many more. Did you know puzzles are great for the mind? Puzzles help prevent cognitive brain decline because they use both sides of your brain; they improve memory; and they can even increase your IQ. Researchers from the University of Michigan found that by spending 25 minutes a day doing puzzles, you can raise your IQ by 4 points!

Did you know: Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland, invented ladder puzzles?

Stop by the Teen Room today!  We will have some puzzles out for you to work on.

What a Year!

Can you believe it’s almost the end of 2021? This year has been very busy for everyone and the same can be said for the Teen Room. Here’s a recap of what we’ve been doing!

Teen Room staff hosted four escape rooms, a 3D printer workshop, and two Dungeons and Dragons workshops.  We also partnered to do two Writer’s workshops with author A. P. Mobley, and two art workshops with Ava Art Center.

Teen Summer Reading was a huge success. We had over 180 teens enrolled in the summer reading challenge, and we gave out almost 3000 grand prize tickets.

This fall, author Nathan Hale presented a cartooning workshop, and author Steve Sheinkin visited the junior high schools. The Teen Volunteers ran the Scholastic Book fair in early December and raised over $1400 in funds.  As a result, the volunteers donated over $700 in books to local youth service agencies.

In total, we had over 11,000 patron visits to the Teen Room this year! We can’t wait to see what 2022 brings us.

Happy New Year from the Teen Room!

We Miss the Makerspace!!

So, we’ve come up with a couple innovative ways to bring it back!

1. Take and Makes

We will be offering two monthly Take and Make projects in the Teen Room. These will contain all of the necessary parts, pieces and tools to create something wonderful.

The line up for March is:

March 1-14

Spiral Gift Boxes

March 15-31

Cloud Dough

2. Circulating Kits

We know you love the Perler beads and what is life without using a hot glue gun every now and again? So, we’ve decided to offer the opportunity to check them out!

Perler bead kits include: mini iron, silicon trivet for the iron to rest on when hot (we will accept no excuses for why you scorched the table, the carpet, your bedding or anything else!) assorted Perler bead boards and a jar of beads.

Hot glue gun kits include: mini glue gun and your choice of clear and/or glitter glue sticks.

We want to see what you create!

Email a picture of your creation to library@ccpls.org.

We’ll post the pic here in the Teen Room and on our social media.

Upcoming and Rumored Book to TV Adaptations

Have you ever read a book that you enjoyed so much that you thought, I would love to see that turned into a movie or television series? Of course you have! Television has a slight advantage over movies. While movies have about 2 hours to flesh out characters, develop a plot, and wrap everything up, television has seasons to do the same. A television season has, on average, thirteen episodes to develop the world and characters, making them perfect for book adaptations. Here are some young adult book-to-television adaptations rumored or coming in the near future.

Love, Victor                                                                                                                           Hulu – Premiered June 19,2020

Love, Simon is the 2018 film based on the book Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. The film followed 17-year-old Simon trying to find out the identity of the classmate he has fallen for online. Love, Victor is the follow-up television series to the movie and is narrated by Simon. Victor is a new student at Creekwood High School and is facing his own challenges with sexual orientation and home issues. He reaches out to Simon to help him.

 Cursed                                                                                                                                 Netflix – Premiered July 17, 2020

This new Netflix original series is based on the book by Thomas Wheeler. Cursed is a new twist on the classic King Arthur tale. Nimue has always had a connection to dark magic, something that makes her feared in her village. Her dying mother charges her with reuniting a sword with a legendary sorcerer. Along the way she finds a young Arthur while he is on his own quest.

Shatter Me                                                                                                                               ABC Studios – Unknown release date

This series is based on the books by Tahereh Mafi. Seventeen-year-old Juliette has a special gift, but to her it feels like a curse. With one touch she can kill a grown man, and nobody knows why or how she has this gift. The Reestablishment only sees Juliette as an opportunity, as a weapon. Juliette must make a life changing choice: work with or against The Reestablishment. This series has been in the works for a while and sadly there has been nothing new posted since 2015.

Shadow and Bone                                                                                                        Netflix- Late 2020

This new series is based on the Grishaverse; a world created by the Grisha Trilogy and the Six of Crows Duology by Leigh Bardugo. The world is split in two by a barrier of darkness called the Shadow Fold where unnatural evil creatures lurk and feast on humans. Alina Starkov is a soldier who uncovers a power that could unite her country. As she struggles to wield her power, dark forces are plotting against her.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians                                                                           Disney + – Unknown release date

Percy Jackson has already been brought to the big screen in two movies, in 2010 and 2013, covering the first two books in the series. Most fans of the books did not like these adaptations due to the inconsistency between the books and the films. Recently Rick Riordan tweeted that he was in works with Disney + to develop a new series that is faithful to the books.  The plan is to have each season cover a different book and he promises he will be working closely to make sure the fans enjoy it. Percy Jackson is a twelve-year-old demigod on one of the most dangerous quests of his life. He must find who stole the ultimate weapon: Zeus’s lightning bolt.

Throne of Glass                                                                                                                  Hulu – Unknown release date

Queen of Shadows is the upcoming television series and named after the fourth book in the Throne of Glass book series by Sarah J. Maas. Calaena is an assassin trying to get her freedom. She must compete along with other thieves and warriors to become the next royal assassin. It was being developed by Hulu, but with no news since 2016 this series is only a rumor right now.

They Both Die at the End                                                                                              HBO- unknown release date

It was reported in February 2019 that the book by Adam Silvera was being turned into a thirty-minute series on HBO. There has been no news since then regarding the series. Rufus and Mateo both receive a phone call by death cast telling them they will die later that day. They don’t know where or the exact moment. They meet each other by the last friend app and spend their last day alive living together.

The Chronicles of Narnia                                                                                                   Netflix- unknown release date

In 2018 it was reported that The Chronicles of Narnia was being rebooted by Netflix into both a series and a new movie.  In June 2019 the project was updated with new information on the creative architect of the series.  Netflix’s deal includes access to all seven books making for a full Narnia universe.  The Chronicles of Narnia follow the Pensive children during World War II. They find a way into Narnia through multiple hidden entrances: a wardrobe, and even a painting, and get pulled into a world of ice queens, satyrs and another war.
