Dungeon Crawler Carl

When the apocalypse slams the world to a stop all in a moment, Coast Guard vet Carl is one of the few survivors, along with his ex-girlfriend’s cat Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk (Donut for short, though Donut would prefer you use the honorific).  Earth’s new alien overlords have declared Earth forfeit, and surviving members of the human (and cat) races are instructed to enter tunnels, fight creatures, gain experience, and new skills to survive.

With Donut immediately labelling Carl her royal bodyguard, and a system AI that somehow integrated a foot-fetish for Carl’s bare tootsies, Carl has his work cut out for him trying to keep himself, Donut, and Mongo the dinosaur chicken alive.  And maybe manage to overthrow a tyrannical government from lightyears away?  Remains to be seen.

Do you want a book that’s equal parts adult Hunger Games, novelization of a video game, annnnnd, well, something really hilarious?

Do you like main characters who are constantly beseiged by outside forces and just have to hang on for dear life and hope they don’t lose their pants?  (Spoiler alert: Carl does in fact lose his pants.  And shoes.  And shirt.  Do you like a hero wearing heart boxers?)

So far, this book is librarian approved 4 7 9 times over.  That should be all you need, yeah?  C’mon.  Grab your library card.  Place the hold.  You know you want to.

I want you to.  Right here.  Doooo it!

I’m currently four books into the series and there’s no rule-of-sequels here.  Each book is consistent in quality and plot to the first, as you experience the same power-ups, powerful loot, satisfying puzzles, and big boss battles alongside Carl and Donut.  This isn’t your traditional male power fantasy.  Though a video-game-style book with a beefed up male protagonist and lots of explosions isn’t my usual cup of tea, Carl’s genuine love for Donut, his respect for other crawlers and NPCs (non-human creatures peopling the games), and his sense of the injustice of what’s happening to humankind makes Dungeon Crawler Carl a romp to treasure, buy multiple copies of, and keep an eye out for author visits to get those puppies signed.

Dungeon Crawler Carl is part of an emerging subgenre called LitRPG.  If you read Dungeon Crawler Carl and want more, keep an eye out for these titles:
